Hey guys, I recently contracted scabies from my sister who got them from her boyfriend. I had them for up to 3 weeks before knowing because the symptoms was just a tiny rash on my hands on the tops of my knuckles, I had went to a walk in clinic a week before that and they said it was likely caused from slicing tomatoes at work. Anyways I have used the Permethrin cream and my body feels really really tingly and I am still itching days after. I know I read on this forum the post scabies itching can last a week or two but the night time/active itching will diminish. My question is should I be using Reactine to calm the itching or just let it go so I can see where I am with it? I was also wondering if I should be using any types of moisturizers for my skin in the meantime?
Thanks

A good clue is to monitor your itching during the evening hours as scabies are more active and tend to have a weird type of drilling itch which is noticeable, you can also look out for new burrows or scratch marks as you may scratch yourself during your sleep without even knowing it. I never used reactine instead I used some hydrocortisone cream which stops itching, kinda messy but it worked and I also used cocoa butter on areas such as my hands, feet, elbows etc.

First off scabies need to be destroyed on anything you come in contact with. If you didnt properly clean everything you will continue to get them. The itching may last up to six weeks even after the scabies are gone. That is because of the skeletons and fecal matter left in your skin.

I agree. Killing the scabies mites within your environment is just as important as killing them within your skin, in most cases as you itch and your clothing comes into contact with your skin you tend to dislodge scabies into your environment. Scabies can live off a host for up to 7 days if the conditions are right. Many people get reinfected because of these very things, they tend to overlook the cleaning part after the first few days of treatment.

re-infection with scabies is very common as people never want to disclose that they actually have it and end up passing it on to other family members or roomates in which it is often contracted again from that family member or individual or even items within the home. It is very important when dealing with scabies that you treat everyone living in the same home and pay careful attention to cleaning your environment or you just risk scabies re-infection.
